At one point I took the initiative to look at various tape formulations and
brands, and the results were this: Often a high-energy VHS formulation from
one manufacturer would be superior in image detail, S/N ratio, and
retension than an SVHS formulation from another manufacturer. There is not
as much difference between SVHS formulations and VHS formulations as there
is between Video 8 and Hi-8.

One gotcha -- often a VHS formulation will produce a good looking image,
but it will "fade" quickly, as the formulation was not designed to retain
that level of information. The magnetized particles will experience a sort
of "magnetic entropy" where they affect each other and the signal on the
tape "smooths out." I don't know how else to describe the effect. An SVHS
formulation will be made to retain this level of information much longer.

If you are just after quick playback of SVHS footage, but don't care if it
looks as good 3 months from now, you can often get by with a good
brand-name VHS tape where you either defeat the SVHS sensor or burn the
appropriate hole in the tape casing with a soldering iron. TDK EHG Hi Fi is
an excellent VHS tape that holds up well in SVHS recording, and is superior
to many SVHS formulations which cost twice as much.

If you are using Video Hi 8, do your self a favour and stick with
Evaporated Metal tapes... the best thing going in consumer video these
days.
